How to find the perfect designer.

Before you meet or speak with an interior designer, you should give some thought as to what you want. Keep in mind, the more information you give the designer, the better the project will reflect your personality. You may even want to think about some questions an interior designer might ask you, such as…

  1. What are you designing the space for?
  2. What are the activities that will take place in the space you are designing?
  3. What is your budget?
  4. Is this a redo or a new space?
  5. What do you want the “personality” of the space to be?
  6. What are your favorite colors?
  7. What are both the positive and negative aspects of the space with which you’re working?

Once you have compiled the above information, you may want to do some homework on your own, from collecting magazine clippings and photos to listing color suggestions for your initial consultation. Then, you should be ready to interview designers.

Give the designer your ideas about your design project and gauge his/her reaction. Often, this will be a good indication of how you’re going to click with the designer. Remember that you’ll be working very closely with your designer, which means you’ll want to be working with someone who will listen to your ideas and concerns.

Ask the designer what services they can provide in addition to furniture and fabric selections (i.e., kitchen design, exterior home finishes, lighting choices, etc.). Discuss project deadlines and how the designer can bring the project in on time, while keeping you updated on progress.

Most importantly, look for evidence during the interview of the designer’s problem solving ability and his/her creativity. For a good designer, creativity is a natural ability… and you’ll be able right away to tell if he/she has it.

Last, but certainly not least, discuss the designer’s fee structure. You’ll want to know if he/she fits into your budget expectations.

In summary, if you prepare for your interview, ask the right questions and follow these simple guidelines, your decorating project is destined to be a huge success.
