With the holidays approaching, we hope you will spend a lot of time with family and friends in your kitchen (with delicious food and good wine, of course)! A sure way to get them all talking is a quick, easy and budget-friendly way to update your kitchen…. A fresh, new backsplash that POPS! An updated backsplash can change the whole look of your room. It is an inexpensive detail (assuming you stay in a reasonable price point with your backsplash choice) that can revamp and renew your space without renovating the whole shabang. This often overlooked element is a trick the design team at CHD often uses to alter the ordinary and turn it into the extraordinary.

With creativity and imagination, a custom designed cabinet/shelving system and a unique beautiful mother of pearl backsplash, this awkward space between two rooms became a show piece for our client. The mother of pearl backsplash gives this coastal home a nod to its surroundings without seeming too expected or “themey.” This gorgeous, shimmery backsplash transformed this unused space next to the kitchen  into the home’s new spectacular  focal point (and shall we mention the added bonus of it housing delicious wine and liquor?).  Now, with the help of this charming design detail, this open area space looks intentionally special and unique.  And, it makes a true statement!!

The marble backsplash in the adjacent kitchen is a modern backdrop for our client’s stainless hood and appliances. This geometric pattern, while serving a highly functional purpose, also compliments the cabinets, color scheme and style of the rest of the home. The design of this backsplash is simple but dramatic, and gives this space the transitional feel our client wanted to achieve.

While the backsplashes are different in pattern, size and scale, you will notice that they work very well together in this home.  The smaller scale mother of pearl backsplash on the custom teal bar compliments the larger scale design on the marble backsplash in the same open space.  You always want your patterns and backsplashes to compliment one another and not compete in size, scale and pattern.

In another Lowcountry home, the aqua color of this kitchen’s backsplash helps introduce the color scheme throughout this home. We painted the island a coordinating shade and kept all the other cabinets crisp white to give this room a light, bright and airy feel. Our design team carefully selected complimentary fabrics for the window treatments, banquet seating, and pillows to enhance the color palette of the interlocking circle backsplash.

A closer look of this space, shows you the beautiful detail of the backsplash. The material, color and pattern enhance the kitchen’s design but does not overpower the space. The backsplash adds interest while serving a dual purpose of protection and decorative detail.

In one of our North Carolina residents, in a mostly monochromatic space, this colorful backsplash gives this commonly overlooked area a pop. It creates an upscale but casual focal point in this pass through from the kitchen to the family room. The CHD design team never wants to miss an opportunity to make a typically ordinary space seem important and well thought out.

Long Story Short:  The simple addition of backsplashes  can turn seemingly ordinary areas into interesting and pleasing spaces that may have otherwise been unmentionable.  And, at CHD, we don’t want one square inch of your house to go without attention!
