Expose Natural Wood or Stone

It is important to respect the “bones” of a house or space before remodeling. The raw structure can have either natural stone, brick or wood features that help create character. These features add texture, warmth and bring nature into the interior. If you are building new construction, expose your beams, use reclaimed wood on door ways, use barn doors for functioning doors or include a stone fireplace. Don’t forget your fifth wall and add wood beams or shiplap to those for added interest.

If you want to make certain wood species in your room a focal point, you can white-wash materials around the exposed wood to serve as a back drop (like below).

Cozy Textiles & Sleek Modern Furniture

To create the modern rustic design, the use of sleek modern furniture must balance with the use of exposed rustic materials.  In commercial settings, glass or reflective solid surfaces contrast rustic design features.  A great way to enhance modern rustic design is to incorporate large windows that let in natural light.  By introducing some natural materials like cowhide, jute, sisal and sheepskin, they will add warmth to a fully modern furnished interior.  Cowhide is also a very durable material that red wine cannot even stain.
